It was a dark night—er weekend—at the box office, as all films in release combined for the second lowest weekend-total yet this summer grossing just $133 million from top to bottom. However, even though Batman is proving to be merely mortal, don’t blame “The Dark Knight Rises” as WB’s blockbuster stood at the top of the podium again, easily taking the gold medal with an estimated $64 million. Down -60%, and now with $289 million in the bat-cave, The Batman is on a direct course to be the 2nd highest grossing film of the summer behind Marvel’s mighty “The Avengers.”

It was really the newcomers that failed to win, place, and barely showed. Most notably Fox’s $70 million sci-fi comedy “The Watch,” which despite three big-name leads—Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill—was unsuccessful in its attempt to probe audiences, as it finished third with an embarrassing $13 million.  

Close behind was Summit’s “Step Up: Revolution” which was anything but a revolution as nary a flash mob showed up to support this tired dance franchise, finishing in fourth place with just $11.8 million.

Universal’s “Ted” continued its marvelous run in fifth place, as the only breakout comedy hit of the summer stuffed another $7.3 million in its pockets (down just -27%), and has now tallied an amazing $193 million.

While many red-button media-pushers will likely try to link last week’s shootings in Colorado or the glory that is the tape-delayed Olympics to this weekend’s bottom-feeder of a box office, it really just comes down to subpar product. Audiences didn’t show up, because the new films offered were uninspired and came in with zero buzz, thus rightfully abandoned in multiplexes.

 “The Dark Knight Rises” is still one of the summer’s biggest hits and will likely end up with the silver medal; however it certainly doesn’t pack the punch that its predecessor did. “The Dark Knight” dropped off just -52% in its second weekend, scoring $75 million—or around $11 million more than the threequel. Holy belly flops, Batman! Not quite. Internationally, “Rises” is on pace to gross more than “TDK,” and equal or pass its worldwide total of $1 billion.

“Ice Age: Continental Drift” floated into second place by default, as the kiddie flick ran aground with $13.3 million. Total is now $114 million…which is a long ways off the $196 million “Dawn of the Dinosaurs” ended up with.    

“The Watch” simply has no excuse for floundering so poorly. But, let’s explore this alien autopsy, shall we? Hey, maybe this just shows you there REALLY are signs of intelligent life in the universe—or at least in North America—as critics shredded the film (14% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it received a lowly C+ Cinemascore. A trailer that produces almost zero laughs isn’t suddenly going to find them when the film rolls out, hell, even Universal’s alien-comedy “Paul” debuted with more firepower. “Step Up” proved it probably needs to step out…of the country. The fourquel was the first released by Summit—the last used Disney’s marketing muscle—but still may not be the last. These dance films do much better overseas, which leads one to wonder if “Step Up: Ibiza Underground” is next on the docket. In limited release, Fox Searchlight’s “Ruby Sparks” earned $11,683 in 13 theatres, or $151k. That isn’t too shabby, but nowhere near the directing tandem of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ last film, “Little Miss Sunshine,” which debuted with nearly $53k per and went on to earn $59 million. This one will be fortunate to make $1.5 million.

LD Entertainment’s inaugural releases, “Killer Joe,” had the highest per-theatre-average outside “The Dark Knight Rises” as it scored $12,621 per at 3 sites. The NC-17 pic was exclusively released in NYC this weekend and will expand into LA, Chicago, SF, Dallas, Austin, and DC next week.

Fox also debuts the threequel: “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.” This tween series has been extremely successful for the studio, so expect an opening of around $20 million as it cannonballs into the deep end of 3,100+ pools.
