Summit Entertainment’s box office blood-sucking threequel, TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE, descended on the fanatical masses at midnight, as it debuted with an estimated $30 million and topped the highest grossing midnight movie of all-time, TWILIGHT: NEW MOON, which earned $26.3 million last fall.
Showing absolutely no signs of franchise fatigue, the single-day record of TWILIGHT: NEW MOON’s $72 million is now within reach; all this, despite opening on a Wednesday instead of a Friday.
Expect ECLIPSE to gross over $100 million domestic its first two days of release and $75+ million for the traditional 3-day weekend. Not too sucky for a flick that cost just $68 million.
ECLIPSE debuted in over 4,000 theatres at midnight, with various sites also screening the vampire drama at 3am.
IMAX scored a record of its own, grossing an estimated $1 million from 192 venues last night. Previously, IMAX’s best midnight showing was for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN which rolled out with $960,000.
